Chennai: Police arrested a man on Thursday in connection with the murder of a woman, whose body was found on November 22 in a construction site in Rajamangalam.
The owner of the house under construction approached the police and filed a complaint about the unidentified body, which was then sent for a postmortem to KMC Hospital. After investigation the body was recently identified as a 45-year-old woman named Govindamal, who hailed from Villupuram and was working in the city as a scrap collector.
Govindamal’s husband Sekhar had passed away eight months ago and both her children were studying in a school while staying at Govindamal’s brother’s house. The victim was also known to be a drug addict and met Mahendran alias Mahesh Kumar, also a drug addict. They started living together after her husband’s death. The couple had a friend named Rajendran, who was also an alcoholic. Tension started to brew after Mahendran came back home one day to find that Rajendran and Govindamal had an illicit relationship.
An angry Mahendran told Govindamal to meet him at a secluded place on November 22 night and then killed her. The police were unable to arrest the killer till the body was identified. After investigation, the police tracked down Rajendran on suspicion of the murder but Rajendran told police that Mahendran was the one behind the murder of the woman. When Mahendran was called in for questioning, he confessed to the crime. The police produced Mahendran at a magistrate court. He has been remanded to Puzhal jail.
