Hyderabad: The NTR Health University has informed the Medical Council of India that the two extra seats allotted to students in the post-graduate pathology course from Kakatiya Medical College can’t be withdrawn. In a communication to the MCI, the NTR University has stated that it will continue with the two seats for 2015-16 but will opt for one seat for 2016-17.
A total of six seats had been allotted to the pathology department but in the next academic year there will only be five seats because of this adjustment. Dr G. Srinivas of the Junior Doctors’ Association said, “This mistake came to light only when the students approached the state government for their stipend. By then six months had been completed. Now how can they be disqualified?”
At the same time, a hue and cry is being raised over the so-called “oversight” by the university administration. “How can six seats be mistaken for seven seats? How come there was no rechecking done at the university level during the counselling? Did no one notice this mistake?” asked a senior professor on condition of anonymity. With full fees paid and bonds signed, the two students have been made to run around first for their stipend and then to ensure that they were not disqualified.
A junior doctor said, “All the seven students are worried as they don’t know on whom the axe will fall. Hence they have been fighting the issue together and want all of them to be retained. As the college has admitted their mistake, it is for them to ensure that they see that the students are not affected in any way.”
