NSS bid to change lives of differently-abled
Thrissur: National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Thrissur have sought to kindle a ray of light in the lives of differently-abled students of Centre for Research and Development of Autistic Children (CRDAS), Thrissur. There are 30 differently-abled students at the centre and teams consisting of two NSS volunteers each look after various needs of one child each in the centre.
The NSS volunteers have undergone special training in nurturing the talents of these children. They visit the centre every Wednesday and spend at least an hour entertaining and educating the children. The volunteers focus on enhancing the speaking ability of the autistic children and they are happy to note that their efforts have produced results.
"Micro teaching has been very effective with these children since they can't concentrate on a subject for a long time. A special curriculum has been designed by the NSS unit which focuses on the holistic development of the children. The children are regularly monitored both by the teachers and NSS volunteers and their special needs taken care of," said Dhanya Joseph, NSS programme officer.
Autistic children always like newer environments and very often the NSS volunteers conduct classes outside the classroom. "The parents of autistic children appreciate the effort of the volunteers and their presence always brings smiles on their faces," said Dhanya Joseph.
