Karnataka Home Minister wants waiting time at traffic signals cut by half
Bengaluru: The Home Department is in the process of preparing a detailed road map to ease traffic congestion and to cut down waiting time at traffic junctions in the traffic-clogged city, said Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwar here on Wednesday.
He said, “We don’t mind bringing down the average speed of vehicles from the present 25 kmph to 16 kmph, which is almost 9 kmph less. But this will largely help us in reducing the waiting period at traffic junctions.”
Giving an example, he said the average waiting period at the Silk Board Junction is not less than 15-20 minutes making it one of the most notorious traffic junctions. There are many such traffic junctions where motorists have to wait for a long time. “If the waiting period comes down at least by half, then it will have a greater impact on people’s mind,” he said.
The Home Department will soon constitute a Traffic Management Task Force, which will have Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at its helm and Infrastructure and Transport ministers along with several prominent personalities from various fields as its members, to work out traffic solutions. There are several problems. There is a need to widen a few roads in the city, the minister added.
Dr G’s plan
- Cut average traffic speed from 25 kmph to 16 kmph, but reduce waiting time at traffic signals by half
- Traffic Management Task Force headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with Infrastructure and Transport ministers and prominent personalities from various fields as its members
- Widening of a few roads, including Airport Road and Chinnaswamy Stadium Road
- Banning lorries during peak traffic hours
- More parking lots at key areas. Will coordinate with BBMP to address problem
- Encourage large companies to use buses to ferry their employees
