Governor humiliated by Arunachal Pradesh ministers

The situation turned so violent that security personnel had to escort the Governor to safety.

Guwahati/New Delhi: The infighting within the ruling Congress party took an ugly turn on Wednesday with some cabinet ministers of Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki accused of threatening and abusing the Governor J.P. Rajkhowa in Rajbhawan. The situation turned so violent that security personnel had to escort the Governor to safety.

The problem started when Mr Tuki accompanied by his eight ministers visited Raj Bhawan on Tuesday night and asked the Governor to recall his December 9 order advance the winter session of the assembly from January 14 to December 16. Mr Rajkhowa was forced to advance the assembly session following the impeachment motion of opposition political parties seeking to remove the speaker Nabam Rebia.

It is significant that political crisis in the ruling Congress was escalating for last six months and at least 11 Congress legislators have been asking for the change of leadership in the state.

Meanwhile, a release by Rajbhawan claimed that some ministers were about to “physically restrain” the Governor. “Led by education minister Tapang Taloh and transport minister Jomde Kena, (they) used unparliamentary words and gestured in a very animated and threatening manner…”

Issue echoes in Parliament
Congress on Wednesday disrupted Parliament over Arunachal Pradesh Governor Jyoti Prashad Rajkhowa, alleging that efforts are being made to “destabilise” the party’s state government, even as the Centre said an “Emergency-like situation” was being witnessed there.

The party forced repeated adjournments of Rajya Sabha over the issue while in Lok Sabha, its members, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, staged a walkout.

Alleging “murder of Constitution and democracy”, the Congress members in both Houses demanded the dismissal of the Governor.

Meanwhile, accusing the Modi government of trying to “oust” the Congress regime in Arunachal with a “pre-planned design”, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders today met President Pranab Mukherjee and lodged a strong protest.
