Core panel for Kummanam Rajasekharan

The new post will be an advanced birthday gift for Mr Kummanam

Thiruvananthapuram: The next state BJP president is likely to be Mr Kummanam Rajasekharan, Hindu Aikya Vedhi general secretary. The central BJP leadership zeroed in on him after parleys with senior BJP leaders from the state in the core committee meeting held in New Delhi, despite opposition from Mr P. K. Krishnadas, BJP national executive member. The official announcement will be made in a day or two.

The new post will be an advanced birthday gift for Mr Kummanam, whose 63rd birthday is on December 23. The core committee meeting which lasted for close to six hours at first did not reach a consensus.

While incumbent president V. Muraleedharan’s camp consisting of general secretaries K. R. Umakanthan and K. Surendran rooted for Mr Kummanam, Mr Krishnadas camp was in favour of Mr R. Balasankar, former editor of RSS mouthpiece, Organiser.

Mr Krishnadas held a meeting at Kerala House which was attended by senior BJP leader O. Rajagopal, vice-president M. T. Ramesh and general secretary A. N. Radhakrishnan. Mr Balasankar also attended the unofficial meeting. BJP national president Amit Shah will consult Prime Minister Narendra Modi before making the official announcement on Mr Kummanam’s appointment.

“With the Assembly elections round the corner, the BJP national leadership is keen to see a pro-Hindu leader coming at the helm of the party in the state. Moreover, several spiritual organisations have batted for Kummanam. The negative factor against Balasankar is that he is considered as an outsider and not a crowd puller,” said a senior BJP leader.

Mr Rajagopal doesn’t stand a chance of being fielded as chief minister candidate in the third front when Mr Kummanam becomes the state president. This prompted Mr Rajagopal to join hands with Mr Krishnadas faction rather than standing neutral.
