5,000 apply daily for duplicate certificates
Chennai: Government offices and special camps are now witnessing more footfalls with public thronging to enquire about the process to get duplicate copies of certificates lost in the floods.
The documents include mark sheets, degree certificates, house pattas, legal heir certificates, voter ID cards, driving license and family cards. So far, nearly 15,000 applications have been received from the public seeking duplicate copies of certificates.
Similar is the situation with Cuddalore and Tiruvallur. On a daily basis in Chennai, at least 5,000 are now petitioning the state departments requesting replacement for lost certificates.
Cuddalore district administration has started distributing new family cards, revenue certificates and driving licenses. “So far 1,600 documents, including ration cards and revenue certificates have been distributed and another 3324 applications received till Tuesday is under processing,” said Gagandeep Singh Bedi, special officer on Cuddalore relief work. The district administration is given seven workings days’ time to verify and issue the new certificates, the official said.
In Chennai, on day three, officials received as many as 5,620 applications of which 1,144 were related to Chennai corporation, an official with Chennai collectorate said adding that on a daily basis more than 1,000 applications seeking new forms are submitted with the transport, corporation and education departments.
Similarly, more people also seek family cards and land records. “Public have faced the worst ever floods in Chennai and officials should ensure that bureaucracy does not hinder distribution of new certificates,” said Arul Mani, a resident of Jafferkhanpet who submitted forms seeking new family card and voter ID.
