10 Karnataka Police personnel prefer death to harassment: Dr G Parameshwar

10 lower rung police personnel in state have reportedly approached the President with mercy killing petitions.

Bengaluru: Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwar on Wednesday made a startling disclosure that as many as 10 lower rung police personnel in state have reportedly approached President Pranab Mukherjee with mercy killing petitions.

The Minister told reporters at Vikas Soudha here, “I am deeply saddened to note that such harassment exists in my department. I am truly ashamed of sharing such a sad piece of news with you (media). I have taken a very serious note of this and directed to the DG and IGP to give me detailed report on these incidents. I will not keep quiet over such incidents.”

He declared that he would not like to hear any more such complaints from lower rung officials. The top police officials must take every cadre into confidence so that their morale is boosted. “All I want is happy and smiling face of policemen, who strive hard to make our lives safe,” he added.

Three constables, their families stage dharna Three police constables, along with their families, staged a dharna in front of the office of Inspector General Police (IGP) in Belagavi, alleging that their higher officers are doing injustice to them. They alleged that they had been unfairly and abruptly transferred from Nipani to Khanapur after they exposed their Inspector Kishor Bharni nexus with the sand mafia in Nipani.

As a disciplinary measure, the police department suspended the three constables — Sanjeev Badadavar, Ravindra Kamble and R.B. Kamble (woman) — for staging the dharna.

Though the police department officials appealed to the families to voice their complaint with the IG, the protesters went ahead with the dharna. The constables said that they had video recordings to prove that Inspector Bharni has illegal links with those involved in sand trade in Nipani. Mr Bharni is also taking bribes to let the illegal trade run, they alleged.

“The video clippings were handed over to the Superintendent of Police, but instead of taking action against the inspector, we were transferred,” the constables said. Some senior police officials met the protesting constables asking them to meet the IG, but the three insisted that the officer should meet them.
