The criminals escaped in a white vehicle into the forests of Gandhari-Lingampet.
Hyderabad: The police opened fire on a gang of robbers who were fleeing in a vehicle at Lingampet in Nizamabad district on Wednesday morning. The criminals escaped in a white vehicle into the forests of Gandhari-Lingampet giving the slip to both Medak and the Nizamabad police. The police has intensified combing operations to trace them. Police started chasing the burglars from Medak town, 50 kilometers away from where the firing took place in Nizamabad district, when they tried to break open an SBI ATM. While the criminals were on the job, a police patrol came on the scene.
“Their driver was waiting inside the vehicle with engine on. As soon as our men arrived they ran into the vehicle and fled. Our team followed them and alerted the border police,” said G. Raja Ratnam, DSP of Medak sub division. However, they fled towards Nizamabad. In the next 45 minutes, the gang escaped the Nagireddypet police dragnet, which was set up based on the alert and came towards Lingampet.
Lingampet SI Palle Rakesh and his men saw the vehicle and fired a round but the robbers escaped. Police chased them but lost them near Bhavanipet village. Police intensified combing in the forests to trace the robbers and the vehicle but their efforts went in vain. Hyderabad zone IG Naveenchand said they suspected the gang was from Maharashtra. The gang robbed three ATMs in Nizamabad district and attempted to rob an ATM in Nizamabad and Medak districts in the last few days.
Meanwhile, IG Naveen-chand and SP S. Chandra-sekhar Reddy visited the spot in Lingampet where the the police opened fire on the robbers.
