From a galaxy far, far away...comes again a tale of Jedis and more
Chennaiites are going all out to show that the Force is strong with them!.
Ever since the first teaser trailer of Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens released a few months back, and Han Solo’s words “Chewie, we’re home”, the world has been waiting for its December 19 premiere. Most of us have already begun making plans to watch the movie on the 25th — wait, what?! Why is the national screening pushed by a week?
Tears streaming down our faces, we have had to come to terms with this grief — that Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale, the double dhamaka releases, were the reason that Han Solo is not yet home. <cries softly>. But then again, we Chennaiites are hardy people, and a week is not that big of a deal…right? Already, science fiction fans in Chennai have started planning for the first day first show, while Facebook and Twitter have been going crazy with memes and the hashtag #Awakentheforce.
Ratikha Venugopal, model and co-founder of the Comic Con Chennai group is pretty excited as well. She tells us about how the popular group has announced a meet on December 19, and will most inevitably talk about the movie. Any cosplays we can expect? “Not really. The trend is only starting now because of the release,” she says, adding that Star Wars costumes are quite expensive to make or buy — with prices starting from '25,000 onwards! That’s pretty steep! How is she counting down the days until the Chennai premiere? “I am just going to block everyone I know from the US. In fact I will even avoid the Internet for a while. If I see even one spoiler or mention of the movie, I’m afraid I will kill someone,” she huffs amusingly.
She’s not the only one in dismay. Ishvar Mohan, a student of psychology from Madras University was eager to catch the early-bird show, but can’t now because of the university exams. “I’m just waiting for the d*** movie to release and my exams to finish, as they were postponed because of the rains. I am a huge fan, and I loved the original trilogy more than the prequels. I was stoked when I found out Mark Hamill was coming back… the guy is a geek god. Can’t wait to see Han and Chewie as well!” he beams.
For Qhizar Shaik, a doctor at Saveetha Medical College and hospital, the movie brings back memories of his childhood. “I’m a big fan, ever since my dad introduced me to the original trilogy, which he watched during his college days. I guess I first saw Star Wars when I was four or five years old,” he reminisces as he stares into space. He adds that a group of friends and himself will be wearing themed T-shirts to the theatre, with one buddy who might even wear Yoda underpants! We’re kidding! Or… are we? Qhizar concludes that this month has also been the time to get their Star Wars limited Lego collectibles out and photographed. And here we were, thinking that Yoda couldn’t get shorter! (Excuse us, he will)
