UP women panel seeks action against 'Bigg Boss'

The recent episodes showed participants using abusive language against women.

Lucknow: In a significant move, the State Women’s Commission (SWC) in Uttar Pradesh has written a letter to the ministry of information and broadcasting, seeking legal action against popular reality show Bigg Boss 9 that is currently being telecast on Colors channel. SWC chairperson Zarina Usmani said that some recent episodes of the programme showed participants using abusive language against women and one of them even threatened physical violence against a woman contestant. “Such programmes send wrong signals in society and promote violence against women. This kind of behaviour cannot be passed off as entertainment,” she said on Wednesday.

Ms Usmani said that the male contestants on the programme had been misbehaving with their female counterparts since the beginning but things were now getting out of hand which promoted the commission to take up the issue. “Even children who watch the show mainly because of its host Salman Khan, are learning to use cuss words and think it is alright to misbehave with women,”she added.

The State Women’s Commission has sent copies of its letter to the ministry of women and child welfare, Prasar Bharti and the National Commission for Women. She said that if the Central government did not take action against the channel and the producers, the State Women’s Commission would initiate legal action against Bigg Boss.
