Tamil Nadu aims at flood resistant smart cities
Chennai: Chennai corporation will incorporate flood resistant solutions in its smart city proposal after Tamil Nadu was afforded a deadline extension by the ministry of urban development (MoUD) on Monday.
Sources told Deccan Chronicle that the state government now has time until December 28 to forward its proposal even as the deadline expired on Tuesday for rest of the country.
As reported by Deccan Chronicle earlier, Chennai corporation has finalised T Nagar for developing into a smart city. But the already prepared proposal will undergo modifications after the December deluge exposed the city’s lack of preparedness to face a natural disaster. As such, focus will be more on water supply and drainage networks, sources said.
“Area development solutions form the plan for T Nagar. We had prepared the proposal with specific focus on improving non-motorised transport as there are projects like pedestrian plaza that are pending,” the source said.
“But given how the city was impacted by flooding following the rainfall, the final proposal will now have solutions to mitigate flood impact as well as bettering the drinking water supply chain,” the source added.
Twelve local bodies from Tamil Nadu, including Chennai Corporation, are to submit proposals to MoUD for smart cities project. On Monday, the Centre announced that it has received proposals from 15 cities in seven states across the country, out of the 98 cities chosen for the project.
