Overseas student of Madras University manhandled by staff

For interrupting the talk by chief guest.

Chennai: An overseas student of Madras University was attacked by its staff members for interrupting the talk by chief guest B. Jothi Nirmala Samy, secretary, TN State Election Commission during a seminar on ‘Revamping Urban Governance Towards Sustainable Future’. Jonas Tulendra Rasa, who hails from France, is a second year student of International Relations.

“In her lecture there was nothing new. I diplomatically tried to tell her that the Government had already said whatever she said, if she had followed the newspaper. We wanted to know something new and everyone else was yawning. She asked me to sit down,” said Rasa adding that professors also forcefully asked him to sit down.

Later, when he left the conference hall for his examination, he was allegedly attacked by three staff members. “One of them was the Controller of Examination. He grabbed and pushed me and started beating me. Following this, another 10 to 15 more people tried to hit me. I was also slapped on my left cheek,” he said.

Following the incident around 50 students gathered at VC’s office. According to the university officials, Vice Chancellor apologised to the student personally. In order to take any action or initiate an inquiry, the student must produce a letter in writing as to what happened outside the room as most university officials were inside the seminar hall, the university said.
