Facebook sees waste fumes
Citizens on Net protest burning of garbage in open.
Hyderabad: Burning of garbage recently caught the attention of social media users when a member on the Facebook group Manthan posted that his house was getting filled with smoke regularly due to burning of green waste, not by municipality members, but by the group member’s educated neighbour. The post read: “My neighbour continually burns dry leaves and branches and other stuff, causing a flood of smoke into our house, creating hazard to our health and home. Our requests to stop this are not heeded. Any suggestions on how to stop it would be welcome. Is there an agency which takes our complaints and acts on it?”
The post received a lot of attention from people and also as requested, suggestion. While some suggested approaching the GHMC, the police and even the judiciary, a few confessed to burning their garden waste due to lack of a proper disposal and waste collection mechanism. The comments on the post exposed many issues that citizens face due to irresponsibility of neighbours or government agencies. It also revealed that many people were either not aware about whom to approach when such civic issues arose or had no faith in the government that their issues would get resolved.
One such post read: “My neighbour has dumped debris from his civil works and hung a blue plastic sheet to assert his rights on the road adjacent to his plot. I don’t have a clue as to what can be done. It looks shabby and so bad and I have to face this every morning. Where can we lodge an effective successful complaint ? Is there a GHMC number we can contact ?”
Another post read: “Had a similar neighbour problem. They have a stray dog at home, which howls like a wolf after midnight. Whenever we complain they give very non - problem solving replies. We could hardly sleep. It went on for a year or so. It’s less now, the dog seems to have got fed up.” Another person complained about burning of grass by HMWS&SB in their premises causing problems for locals. However, there were some funny suggestions too. “Try Gandhigiri. Invite them for lunch and request them. If they don’t listen, burn dry chillies and put a fan to divert smoke to their house,” read one.
