Chennai schools may cut Xmas Holidays
Chennai: It’s official now. Christmas vacations will be curtailed for many schools in the city, with some institutions giving only one day holiday to make up for the working days lost due to floods.
Every year, schools are closed for a week during the Christmas week from December 23 to January 2, but due to loss of working days on account of floods many schools may curtail Christmas holidays.
According to director of school education S. Kannapan, since the half-yearly examination was postponed to January the subsequent vacation following the examination in December has also been cancelled.
But on the day of the festival, on December 25 and 26, there will be one or two days’ holiday. A staff member of PSBB School in K.K. Nagar said that this time there wouldn’t be any Christmas holiday for students. “Due to heavy rain and flood, we already missed lot of classes and it had a huge impact on our students. So the management has decided that there won’t be any long Christmas holiday,” said a staff member of the school requesting anonymity. While classes from nursery to 6 will remain closed, classes from seven to 12 will remain open.
Malati Ryan, principal of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair, said the school may have a one-day holiday for Christmas. “We haven’t yet decided anything as of now. We are waiting for the government order,” she said.
Principal of Ravindra Bharathi Global School said, “We missed some working days. We will work on one or two Saturdays as well as during Christmas. But for Christmas holiday we are waiting for the government order.” She further added that since the school does not have half-yearly system and it is an ongoing assessment they don’t exam tension.
“We did not get any circular from the director of school education but usually the schools have nine or 10 days of holiday,” said A. Anitha, chief educational officer. But some schools will have long holidays keeping in mind that many parents have already booked tickets for various tours.
According to R. Edison, Head Master, Arignar Anna Government Higher Secondary School, Christmas holiday might start from December 23 till January 2. “We have not get any direction from the government yet, so the school will have normal Christmas holiday,” he said.
