‘No more side-kick roles’
Actor Manikkuttan, who is a decade old in the industry has decided not to play side-kicks.
No more side roles, unless those that have a prominence in the storyline, says Manikuttan, who debuted as a hero with Vinayan’s Boyy Friennd in 2005 and went on portraying sidekicks in various movies. The actor, who will be seen on the silver screen after a brief hiatus in a cop avatar through Prithviraj-starrer Pavada, has finally decided to bid adieu to sidekick roles.
“After Sanal chettan’s (Vasudevan Sanal) God’s Own Country in which I acted as a thug, which was an important role, I started being more selective. That character became a benchmark in my nine-year-old career and so I decided to select roles which have importance in the film. I am not adamant in doing just hero roles. I am ready to portray supporting roles too,” says the actor, who will be acting as a police officer in Marthandan’s Pavada.
“It was around nine months back I got the call to act in Pavada. Though I have acted as a police officer in Hotel California, my character, Suresh Kumar, in Pavada is completely different from the previous one. Though it is an out-and-out fun film, mine is a very serious role — a former colleague of Anoop (Menon) chettan’s character. Initially, this film was planned to start by June, but owing to certain technical issues, the production got delayed till August. So I got more time to work out at the gymnasium to get the physique of a police officer,” says Manikuttan, who also sports a thick moustache in the film.
“I give much importance to my attire as well as body shape. I am very strict in practising dance as well as going to gymnasium every week as both helps me maintain fitness. Many of my friends in industry, including Anoop chettan, still say that I have not changed much in appearance since my debut.” The actor is quite overwhelmed with the good comments from the director on his dedication. “When Marthandan chettan narrated the script, there were hardly eight scenes for my character. But after the production got on, he added three more scenes for me as a complement for my extra effort for the perfection of the role,” he says.
Manikuttan, who wrapped up the shoot of Pavada a month ago, has not yet signed any film. “I have started the practice for the Celebrity Cricket League. As of now, I am focusing on that. But Anoop chettan has discussed a project with me and hopefully it will go on the floors after the CCL,” says the all-rounder for Mollywood team Kerala Strikers.
