State school teachers in profit club

The salaries range from Rs 40,000 to more than Rs 1 lakh per month.

Hyderabad: While the salaries of government teachers would make many corporate employees envious, most teachers hardly put in any work. The salaries range from Rs 40,000 to more than Rs 1 lakh per month.

However, it has come to the notice of the Education department that many of these teachers are not sincere in their duties. Many teachers are either not reporting for duty regularly or are unavailable in the schools during working hours as they are busy conducting their personal businesses.

Last month the Education department had conducted an internal quality assessment survey. When three days of teachers’ attendance was analysed it was found that nearly 25 per cent teachers were not on duty during school hours.

Mr G. Kishan, director of School Education said, "The issue of poor attendance by some teachers in government schools is prevalent in all districts of the state, especially in schools located in remote locations. We are looking into the matter and are planning on how to motivate them to be honest with their responsibilities.

Action was also initiated against a few teachers recently.” Mr N. Narayana, vice president of School Teachers’ Federation of India said, “The positions of inspectors of schools are not being filled because it has to be filled by teachers who get promoted.

But promotions are on hold as a Supreme Court case is pending on service rules. However, many bureaucrats had earlier suggested that direct recruitment should be held for inspectors of schools so that the quality of education can be maintained.

To this there has been no response from the state government.” Poor quality of education in government schools is the main reason why many poor people in the state and even in city send their kids to private schools even though it becomes difficult for them to pay the fees.
