Hyderabad: Almost all Indian students from 14 departments of the Science College and those from Nizam College, Koti Women’s College and University College of Science, Saifabad did not sit for their semester-end exams that started on Monday.
The students had been protesting since Friday demanding that the university delay the semester ending exams. The practical exams had got over on December 11 and the students wanted at least a week’s time between the practical and theory exams to prepare.
The university, however, stuck to the schedule and conducted the exam from Monday. The administration had also warned that the exams would not be conducted again for those who abstained. However, this did not deter students. Only foreign students from the Science College appeared for the exams and the attendance of Indians was negligible.
On Monday, students — led mainly by girl students — protested outside the administration building demanding to meet the registrar to put forward their demand. More than 40 police personnel dispersed the students.
OU registrar Prof. E. Suresh Kumar said, “Only Science students from the campus and constituent colleges did not give the exam. It was conducted in all affiliated colleges and 95 per cent of the students gave the exam. There will be no change in the schedule of the examination. Exams for first semester PG will start from Tuesday as scheduled.
“The students will realise that the university is serious and will fall in line and give the remaining exams. Some incidents have come to our notice and action will be taken.” Meanwhile, some of the professors from the university feel that the university is at fault and that the students’ demand is legitimate.
