Students seek CBI probe into Madras University scams
Chennai: Madras University students on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into various scams in the university. They conducted a rally from the university premises to the secretariat highlighting their demands. Students also wanted the university to revoke suspension of four M. Phil students of the politics and Public administration department.
According to the protesting students, basic amenities like water, dustbin and Internet facilities are not being provided properly. They also accused the authorities of illegal appointment of professors.
“The appointment of professors was not done in the right manner. Often relatives of authorities are appointed as professors and in many cases they are not eligible,” said G.Hari Ram a first year MA student.
For the past two years, students have not been getting proper basic amenities, he said. “Apart from the irregularities going on in the university, we also conducted this rally to request for the revocation of suspension of four M.Phil students,” said T. Sivachandra, another student.
According to Madras University Registrar P. David Jawahar, the scrapping of M. Phil programme happened two months ago and the programme had been restarted. “There were only two students who were suspended. They had gone to the court saying that they should be reinstated. The court itself asked students to give a letter in writing stating that they apologise for whatever they have done. I have a court direction with me,” he said.
Further he said that he had asked these students to give an apology letter and get back to class. “We allowed students to write the exams and they had written it and there was no way we were penalising the students,” he added.
On corruption charges he said that students are stakeholders and they can point out the shortcomings of the system. “We also must be very specific when we make allegations of corruption. The students should support with evidence of such charges. They should not make blind allegations,” he said.
