THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘insulting’ the people of Kerala on the R. Sankar statue issue.
“The Chief Minister is the voice of the people of Kerala and cancelling an invitation to him is an insult. This can never be accepted,” he told reporters outside Parliament.
He was responding to the controversy on excluding Mr Oommen Chandy from the programme where Mr Narendra Modi will unveil R. Sankar's statue in Kollam on Tuesday.
The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes after the Speaker disallowed an adjournment motion for which the Congress MPs from Kerala had given notice. They said that Mr Chandy was humiliated by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Though Mr Chandy was invited for the function earlier, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan later informed Mr Chandy that he need not attend it as certain quarters had objected to his presence.
The BJP, distancing itself from the controversy, said that it was a private function and that the CM’s presence was unnecessary as it was planned by the SN Trust.
