Kerala High Court judge penalises cops for ‘misconduct’

Civil cops had asked judge to identify himself in temple.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Monday witnessed unprecedented scenes as a High Court judge summoned two civil police officers and made them stand in the court room for an entire day for an alleged misconduct. The court also made them write an imposition about the ‘duties of police.’

Justice P.D. Rajan summoned them for ‘misbehaving’ with him at Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Trippunithura. The court asked them to write down the duty of police in the Kerala Police Act. Though the two tendered an unconditional apology, the court summoned Kochi City Police Commissioner at 4 p.m. on Tuesday before taking a decision.

The two cops, K.R. Rajeev Nath and Satheesh Babu of the Trippunithura Hill Palace police station, appeared before the court pursuant to a call made from the High Court to the station.

The two reached the court room at 10.15 a.m. when it started its proceedings. During the lunch break, Justice Rajan told Director-General of Prosecutions T. Asaf Ali to meet him in his chambers. He asked the DGP to inform the Kochi City Police Commissioner M.P. Dinesh to appear before the court on Monday itself.

Mr Asaf Ali informed the judge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in town and that the commissioner was monitoring the traffic duties. Later, the judge asked the commissioner to appear on Tuesday.

According to Mr Satheesh Babu, Justice Rajan visited the temple to call his wife who was on official duty for the ‘Vrishchikol-savam’ festival. Since the way to a makeshift clinic where his wife is working was through the police aid post, the judge asked the two cops to call his wife.

“We asked the judge to identify himself. We addressed him Chetta (elder). The judge later went inside and while coming back asked us to reveal our official numbers as per the police rolls. Since the person refused to reveal the identity, we also didn't hand over our numbers. We came to know that he was a High Court judge only much later,” he said. No case has been registered against the policemen.
