Centre owes Rs 47,000 crore to Telangana

Telangana has no money to fund its welfare plans.

Hyderabad: While less than four months are remaining of the 2015-16 fiscal year, the Telangana state government is still waiting for the Rs 47,000 crore that the Centre has to pay it as grants, share in taxes and other packages.

The Centre owes over Rs 30,000 crore towards development of backward areas, Rs 7,182 crore of Central Sales Tax arrears and Rs 6,653 grant-in-aid to TS. The government has failed to adjust Rs 4,000 crore for fee reimbursement and scholarships for students and Rs 8,000 crore for one-time payment of the crop loan waiver to banks so far this year due to lack of funds.

It also owes Rs 5,000 crore to the state government employees towards nine months’ arrears of the 10th Pay Revision Commission. The government, drawing flak from students, farmers and employees for the delay, has thus been looking at the Centre for its dues to fulfill its obligations, but in vain.

The TS Budget estimates on Centre’s grants have gone awry with no response from the Centre despite repeated requests by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and finance minister Etela Rajender who have visited New Delhi multiple times.
