BMTC’s Intelligent Transport System delayed till January
Bengaluru: Intelligent Transport System (ITS) is the most ambitious project undertaken by BMTC. But it has failed to take off, despite the transport corporation setting itself several deadlines. Though last month BMTC officials said that the full-fledged project would be launched in December, it has now been pushed to January next year.
The pilot project was initially launched at Yelahanka depot, and a bigger rollout covering all the depots was expected this month. The pilot project faced a number of issues, including glitches with the Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM) and the GPS in the buses not reflecting accurate data. These issues, however, have been resolved now. IT head, BMTC, Biswajeet Mishra said, “Under the programme, 55 schedules are running from each depot. We should be able to launch it fully by January-end.” BMTC sources revealed that the training of BMTC staff has been a major cause for the delay.
Once ITS is launched, all BMTC buses will be installed with GPS and all conductors will have electronic ticketing machines. Neither the bus staff can manipulate money earned from the tickets, nor will they be able to divert from demarcated routes.
It is not necessary for BMTC officials to sit in the control room to monitor. Anyone who has an ID and password can access the data from anywhere. The data is updated every 10 seconds. It also sends alerts if a bus is speeding, diverting from the route and departing late.
ITS, which is the flagship project of BMTC, is being implemented at a cost of Rs 72 crore stretched over five years. The corporation earned Rs 1,516 crore during 2012-13
