Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh, popularly known as the rice bowl of India, is turning into the fish bowl of India. In the first six months of the current fiscal, the agriculture department recorded a negative growth of -9.34 per cent whereas the fisheries department achieved a 119.20 per cent growth rate.
The adverse seasonal conditions between July and August led to the overall decrease in the area sown with paddy during Kharif 2015. From July to September, early Kharif crops like sesamum, green gram, and bajra are harvested, but their commercial value is comparatively low.
According to production data for Kharif crops harvested during the second quarter, there was a decline in the production of paddy, jowar, maize and groundnut crops.
The production of green gram and black gram increased slightly. According to the AP planning department, the turnover per hectare for paddy is Rs 0.98 lakh, Rs 14 lakh for prawn and Rs 5.6 lakh for fish. In the coming days, fisheries would be the main revenue for state.
