4 in 10 Indian men have lipid disorder, reveals survey
Rurdesh Jain, a 32-year-old bakery shop owner near Wadala station, succumbed to a heart attack. He was in his shop when suddenly he fell down in front of his son. Immediately, he was rushed to a hospital but it was too late.
It’s been a year since the incident, but his wife, Ridhi still can’t believe that her husband died at such an early age.
“My husband was healthy except that he had cholesterol problem. He used to take proper care to maintain the level but it couldn’t help save his life,” said Ridhi, while talking to The Asian Age.
Rurdesh’s is just one of the many cases that are on the rise in the city due to the growing intake of junk foods and irregular life style.
The same issue was highlighted in a recently conducted three-year-long pan India data mining survey (2012 – 2014) on lipid profile tests done on men.
Lipid disorder is a group of medical condition that refers to the excessive levels of fatty substances in the bloodstream.
Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as being on a high fat diet, being overweight and smoking are major contributing factors leading to lipid disorders.
In the survey, 13,93,648 men were screened during in the past three years. As per the result, around 40 per cent of the surveyed people had abnormal levels and it was predominantly found in the age groups of 31-45 years making up about 40.57 per cent.
The number was found to be lower among the age group of 46-60 years with 33.89 per cent reporting the disorder. The survey was conducted in four zones — East, West, South and North.
Eastern zone had highest percentage of abnormality with 42.2 per cent, while northern and western zone had 40.3 per cent and 39.1 per cent respectively.
Dr Leena Chatterjee, director, Fortis SRL Labs and SRL Strategic Initiatives, said, “Lipid disorders lead to excess unhealthy lipids or fatty substances in the blood, and are an important risk factor in developing arteriosclerosis and heart diseases.”
