‘Revive Urdu to appreciate qawwali’
Ustad Ateeq Hussain Khan Bandanawazi talks about the need to propagate Urdu to understand qawwalis.
Ustad Ateeq Hussain Khan Bandanawazi performed Sufiana Qawwali at the ongoing 19th National Urdu Book Fair at Quli Qutb Shah Stadium in Hyderabad.
Says Hussain, “I started learning music from my father Ustad Iqbal Hussain Khan Bandanawazi at the age of five. I loved accompanying him to all his programmes.
His lineage was the Rampur Sahaswan, Gwalior and Badaun Gharana of Khayal singing before he finally settled in Hyderabad. He was famous for his rendition of Aaj Rang Hai. It was very touching to see my father’s fans remembering him. Our group has been popularly known as the Bandanawazi Qawwal.
“Qaul in Arabic means ‘an utterance of the Prophet’ and qawwali is the presentation of these songs. Most qawwalis are set in Urdu. But the language is not reaching out to the younger generation in a big way. This is why the youth is unable to connect to the spiritual salvation that is supposed to be derived by a listener. Revival of Urdu would automatically see good days for the practitioners of qawwali,” says Hussain.
