Sandalwood centuries
The golden era of Sandalwood in terms of box office collections was undoubtedly during the time of Annavru — the late thespian Dr Rajkumar. At his peak, with his films hardly missing the 100 day celebration mark, it was a golden era. With the change in time and influences from other language films and tougher competition, the ‘real’ 100 day celebrations are a thing of the past. If not for the popular ‘star’ hero films, Kannada films are finding it hard to touch even the 50 day mark. Though most film makers, claim, through posters that their films are ‘running successfully’ for weeks on end, in reality, a majority of them are not very profitable and these claims are just survival tactics.
However, with several recent films gaining back the acclaim of the Kannada watching audience, with films like Rangitaranga, and Kendasampige, the 100 day saga might begin again. Rangitaranga recently celebrated its 25th week at the box office . The talented director Suri too tasted success with his experimental film Kendasampige inching towards the 100 day mark this week. The team plans to celebrate its success in Sandalwood style. Mr and Mrs Ramachari and Ranna too saw success. Which is an indication that Sandalwood is back in form — big time. Thank God for that.
