A true-blue Tamil magan

Dhanush is on as fantastic a roll as ever, as he awaits the release of Thanga Magan.
At a time when Tamil Nadu is undergoing a stressful phase, my film Thanga Magan which is a family entertainer, will give some sort of relief for the audience,” begins Dhanush, also clarifying that the flick is not VIP 2 as rumored — “This has a fresh story and will go well with everyone.”
On his penchant for using father-in-law Rajinikanth’s yesteryear blockbuster titles for his films, he explains, “We don’t plan and keep them; it’s coincidental! My earlier films like Polladhavan and Padikkadhavan had Rajini sir’s film titles. But this outing was earlier titled Tamizh Magan, as my name in the film is Tamizh. Then, there was pressure from the producer to make it Thanga Magan as it was apt for the script.”
Heaping praises on his co-stars Samantha and Amy Jackson, he says, “The film travels along two different timelines — my romance with Amy before marriage, and a family man with Samantha as my wife. Both are very sincere and dedicated. They have great roles and have given their best.”
The lanky actor adds that he also wants to wield the megaphone soon, “The dream of becoming a director is always there. But I need to wait for the right time. That’s why I observe all the filmmakers whom I work with.”
Why is he only collaborating with composer Anirudh always? “He is my brother and I literally raised him. We exchange ideas and there’s no ego between us. That doesn’t mean that I won’t work with other composers — Imman is doing music for my flick with Prabhu Solomon sir.”
Dhanush also says that he witnessed his brother Selvaraghavan narrating Kaadhal Konden during his early career, to at least 10 actors, and being frustrated at not getting a chance to prove his talent – “That was the reason why I started my production house, Wunderbar Films, keen on identifying and promoting good talent. We introduce at least one technician with each film. We have also bought the remake rights of a Hindi woman-centric social drama, Nil Battey Sannata, in Tamil, which will be directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, who did the original as well. Amala Paul has been brought on board and talks are on with Revathy.”
When asked about Vada Chennai with Vetri Maaran, which has been in the pipeline for so many years, Dhanush humbly admits, “It is a mammoth budget film conceived in two parts. Five years ago, my market wasn’t big enough to start a film like it. Now, we plan to commence soon and will release by summer 2017.”
We also hear that Mani Ratnam approached him for a project. “Yes, we spoke, but it didn’t work out. However, I would definitely want to work with him in future.”
The actor, who has done roles in negative shades earlier, says that he wants to play a hardcore villain in one of his films. “It need not be an anti-hero subject. I am game for a highly menacing negative character, but it should give me plenty of scope to perform (laughs).”
Earlier, he had given a platform to Sivakarthikeyan, and if rumours are to be believed, after their fallout, Dhanush is now promoting Vijay Sethupathy. “If you want an honest answer, then Sivakarthikeyan has grown so big that my company cannot afford to pay his salary!” Dhanush laughs and also reacts to a query on responsibility towards the society and staying away from smoking scenes — “It’s the director’s call. As an actor, the commitment towards my job is important and I give my 100 per cent. But in real life I don’t smoke.”
He concludes by clearing talk of his misunderstanding with Nayanthara during the filming of Naanum Rowdy Thaan, as she was reportedly troubled after rumours of her and director Vignesh Sivan circulated— “Oh no! It was me who suggested Nayan’s name for the female lead as I have lot of conviction in her performance. Yes, there was confusion in terms of budget being overshot when they were shooting the climax. But I only spent those extra bucks and no one else.”
