Rival maths stake claim to Navavrindavana

Uttaradi Math could not perform rituals on the first day of the three-day celebrations of Sri Padmanabha Teertha.
BALLARI: Navavrindavana, an island where the tombs of nine Madhwa saints in the river Tungabhadra between world heritage site Hampi and Anegundi, has turned into bone of contention between Uttaradi Math and Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math, though both propogate the Dwaitha philosophy. The dispute over the right to worship these Vrindavanas (tombs of saints) has created some tense moments this year during the three-day 'Aradhana'' of Sri Padmanabha Teertha, the first disciple of Madhwacharya commenced on Wednesday.
For the first time in recent years, Uttaradi Math could not perform rituals on the first day of the three-day celebrations of Sri Padmanabha Teertha. Similarly, Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math, which used to perform the “Aradhana” from the second half of the second day, could not perform the rituals on the first day itself. With both maths involved in a long-drawn legal battle, police security cover was provided for the rituals as disciples of both maths turned against each other.
For some time, the two maths were performing the three-day 'Aradhana' for one-and-a-half day each. Recently, the long-drawn property dispute between two maths has gone in favour of Uttaradi Math. On April 22, Principal Senior Civil Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dharwad, while disposing off the appeal filed by Uttaradi Maht, upheld the contention of the plaintiff and passed orders restraining the defendant Raghavendra Swamy math by way of perpetual injunction from interfering with the plaintiff possession and enjoyment of the suit property (Navavrindavan).
“It is clarified that the rider shall not be construed as declaring the rights of the defendant mutt to perform aradhanas and pujas,” the order said.
