Kemal B Pasha calls for serial censorship
KOCHI: Kerala High Court judge Justice Kemal B. Pasha has called for exploring the possibility of imposing censorship for serials shown on television channels.
Inaugurating a seminar on 'Court Reporting' organised by Ernakulam Press Club on Saturday, Justice Pasha came down heavily on the themes adopted by most serials.
Describing the serials as much worse than pulp fiction, he said most serials are based on the theme of husband and wife cheating each other, elopement, abortion and revenge.
People in general and women and children in particular being constantly exposed to grotesque images of violence and cruelty is not good for any society, he said. Television channels should seriously think about the content of the serials, he added.
The media is free to report observations made by the judges in the open court, Justice Pasha said on Saturday. The media, however, should take adequate care in reporting the matter in connection with the relevant cases.
"The media should not use observations made by judges in the open court to humiliate or cast aspersions on anybody," he said.
Justice Pasha also mentioned that the observations need not become part of the judgment. The report should take into account the relevance of the matter under consideration, he added.
The judges should be aware of what is happening in the society, but at the same time judges should remember that they don't have the right to express their personal opinions on such matters.
