Drunk driving: Bengaluru traffic police on their toes
BENGALURU: Bengaluru traffic police on Saturday launched a campaign against drunken driving with an intention to reduce the number of cases, which usually sees a steep rise in December.
During the launch of the campaign at Opera junction on Brigade Road, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) M.A. Saleem said the city police have taken drunk driving cases seriously, as they pose a threat to road users. Hence the police have decided to launch the campaign and create awareness among road users, he added.
For first time offenders the police will send driving licence to RTO for suspension and there will be strict punishment for second time offenders. The police are requesting the courts to send the third time offenders to prisons to send a strong message, he added.
During the launch of a long-month drive, Manipal hospital CEO Dr Sudrashan Ballal and Urban analyst V Ravichandar Ballal requested the police to act strictly against those driving under the influence of alcohol.
To create awareness the team flagged of a mangled car on a truck, which was driven by a man in inebriated condition with a message ‘I was driven by a drunk’. The Metropolitan magistrate has remanded five persons in judicial custody in the last 15 days for drunk driving.
