Computer science drives maths: Russian expert
KOCHI: From around the 17th Century physics and physicists had been shaping many directions in mathematics until the mid 20th century. Today, the trends in mathematics are driven by computer science.
According to Prof. Mikhail Volkov, a renowned mathematician from Russia, this has brought a consequent change in the mathematics curriculum of schools in Russia.
Till a few decades ago, the system of teaching maths in Russia was through mathematics itself. Later, the scenario changed when students were more interested in Information Technology for their careers. This was mainly after the disnitegration of USSR.
In spite of an ever-increasing use of technology in the learning spectrum, Prof. Mikhail Volkov still prefers to teach his students in the traditional way. He visited the department of mathematics, Cusat, under the Erudite Program of Kerala State Higher Education Council, the other day.
“Computerised way of teaching lacks interaction, and I find it impersonal. Therefore, I prefer to stick with the traditional method of teaching where I can work with my students on a one-on-one basis,” he says. Russia, incubating a strong math olympiad culture that should be emulated everywhere else in the world, has a strong tradition of producing amazing mathematicians.
Mr Volkov recalls his schooling years when he would attend the free additional math classes provided by the state government.
He attributes his initial interest in mathematics to this system by the government. He states that differences are hard to find when comparing mathematics students in India with Russian students.
“I think it is a good idea that the government of Kerala establishes a program like this. I am very happy to be part of this, and I definitely consider it an honor. Even though my schedule is quite tight I had certainly enjoyed myself,” he says.
