CM Oommen Chandy had sent letter inviting Narendra Modi for statue unveiling a year ago

The chief minister had hailed R Sankar as the champion of downtrodden sections of society

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 17, 2014 enclosing SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan's request to unveil the statue of R Sankar in Kollam.

The chief minister had hailed R Sankar as the champion of downtrodden sections of society and urged the prime minister to unveil the statue in SN College compound at Kollam.

Interestingly there was no mention in the letter of Sankar being the first Congress chief minister of the state and a former KPCC president for obvious reasons.

Political observers say by recommending Vellapally's request, Chandy wanted to woo the powerful Ezhava community. But now Congress leaders are crying hoarse over Vellapally keeping out Chandy from the function.

They say what Chandy is facing today is something that all politicians who try to woo caste and communal groups, would face one day. They say its a big lesson for politicians of all hues to keep a distance from such caste and communal groups.
