Braving all odds, railways complete work
Chennai: Railway passenger movement at all the 26 stations in Chennai division has returned to its full strength after 12 days of massive relief and restoration work conducted by railway officials on a war-footing.
“Except a few power block and line block to facilitate engineering work between Vandalur-Guduvanchery stations, all trains will be operated as per schedule as it was earlier from Saturday onwards,” said an official at the operations department, Southern Railway.
Senior officials at the southern railway headquarters maintained that the combined relief work that was undertaken by the mechanical, operational, maintenance and Railway Protection Force (RPF) with the Government Railway Police (GRP) helped more than 44,000 passengers who were stranded. They were sent to their destinations through special trains for the past 12 days.
“We were able to rescue all these passengers when both Central and Egmore remained cut-off for nearly four days due to backflow of Cooum, mainline breaches and damage to Adyar Bridge, “ said Anupam Sharma, Divisional Railway Manager.
He added that the 350-metre track washout between Chingleput – Villupuram due to the sudden overflow from Mambattam and Silavattam tanks was restored in a record time of nearly 20 hours. The one-kilometre track washout between Vandalur and Guduvanchery on December 1 was also restored within 70 hours.
