GHMC polls in third week of January 2016: KT Rama Rao
Hyderabad: Minister for information technology K.T. Rama Rao on Friday indicated that the GHMC polls would be held in the third week of January 2016.
Speaking to reporters at Secretariat he said since the delimitation of wards and reservations for various categories had been completed, the election notification was expected in a day or two and polling would be in the third week of January.
Though Mr Rao refused to come on record regarding the exact date of polling, enough hints were given that it would be scheduled on Sunday, January 17. However, the timing is likely to create a political storm as it clashes with Sankranthi vacations for schools and colleges.
Since Sankranthi is a major festival in AP, lakhs of voters of AP origin living in the city leave for their native places to celebrate the festival every year.
The educational institutions in the city will remain closed from January 10 to 17 for Sankranthi. People wanting to vote in elections have to cut short their vacation at least by a day to be in the city by January 17.
Opposition parties have already raised objections over conducting GHMC elections during Sankranthi vacations.
