Protest over Osmania University exams
Students demonstrated outside the administrative building of Osmania University.
Hyderabad: Students demonstrated outside the administrative building of Osmania University on Friday demanding postponement of the semester exams, which are to start from Monday. They, especially the first semester students, said that because the semester started more than a month late this year they did not get enough time to study.
S. Vinod Kumar, one of the protesting students from the Botany department of the university said, “The course was rushed through in three months instead of four. As per the university almanac the first and third semesters should have started in August whereas they started in September. We need some more time to prepare for exams and demanded that exams be delayed by 10 days.”
While the university started the semester late, private affiliated colleges had started their semesters soon after the first round of admissions got over in August. This is not the first time that such a demand has been made in the university as previously too semester exams were postponed after such demands from students, affecting thousands of students studying in 83 affiliated PG colleges.
The main reason why the semesters usually do not start in the university as per its almanac is the hostel issue. A senior professor, however, said, “This year exams will not be delayed because students protested on Friday, and the second Saturday and Sunday are holidays for the university. On Friday the university took no decision on postponement of the exams. So, the exams will be conducted as planned on Monday.”
