Kozhikode: Illegal hoardings hinder the view of drivers on both sides of the highways and city roads, but the National Highway Authority (NHA) is not able to clear them because of threats from various groups.
The NHA with the support of district administration and the municipal corporation had three months back cleared the city roads of hoardings and arches. But new ones have sprung up all over the place. They sought the help of police last month to remove them and continue to wait.
A letter dated November 28, submitted by NHAI assistant engineer to both the assistant commissioners of South and North divisions, says their presence is alarmingly high.
Along NH 212 and 17 between West Hill and Meenchantha and near the Income Tax Office, Mananchira, both sides are packed with billboards and arches. They pose a threat to vehicles and walkers alike.
NHA assistant engineer E.K. Hydrose said they were ready to remove them but there were many places they needed the police support.
“There are many groups opposing tooth and nail attempts to remove them,” he told DC. “We are waiting for a green signal from the police.”
