Life starts afresh for flood-hit

There is no dearth in supply of relief materials, say affected

Chennai: After the deluge, people in the worst affected areas have started knitting their lives back. Many claim they were neglected by officials. Houses at Thideer Nagar, near Marmalong Bridge, Saidapet, were submerged. Those living on the first floor too were not spared.

Many residents voiced the same opinion that government offered no help. It did not follow up on their condition, only volunteers helped them.

“There was water up to the main road. Everyone started staying in the school, but there was water up to the first floor of the school building too,” Navaneetha, one of the affected, said pointing to the school building opposite her house.

According to residents, the councillor, M. N. Babu, came once and saw the area while passing by in his car. Though the city got back to normal by Tuesday, power supply was restored in this area only last evening.

People said there was no dearth in the supply of relief materials, including food, water, blankets and mats. Many people said whatever relief was provided was by volunteers. They are even now distributing relief materials and disinfecting the area.

S. Lavanya, a third year B.Com student, said the TV, fridge and washing machine in her house were damaged. Madipakkam, near Velachery, was also one of the badly hit places, but now life is coming back to normal. So also is business.

According to Bharathi, a resident of Periyar Nagar, floodwaters entered her house, but the situation was not as bad as in areas like Kuber Nagar, where her sister resides. Ravi Kumar, a businessman, said: “My business had stopped due to floodwaters from Puzhuthivakkam lake entering my workshop causing damage. But, now things are getting back to normal and I have started work again.” Asked about the help rendered during the floods, he said volunteers helped, so did AIADMK members.
