LDF in no mood to spare Oommen Chandy, K Babu

The opposition leader said even the police top brass was divided on the issue of corruption.

THIRUVANANTHAPRAM: The Solar Commission may have failed to recover Biju Radhakrishnan's CD containing alleged damning evidence against the Chief Minister and others, but the Opposition LDF seems to be in no mood to spare Oommen Chandy and his cabinet colleagues.

Hundreds of workers took part in marches held to the secretariat and collectorates spearheaded by top LDF leaders demanding the resignation of CM Chandy and excise minister K. Babu in solar and bar bribe cases respectively.

Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan who inaugurated the protest in front of the secretariat termed Mr Chandy as the most “shameless” Chief Minister in the history of the state.

He said the corruption and sexual allegations had not been levelled against just one Oommen Chandy of Puthupally but the Chief Minister of the state. E.M.S. Namboodiripad, C. Achutha Menon , E.K. Nayanar and A.K. Antony had also ruled the state but such grave allegations had never been levelled against them. “If the Chief Minister has even an iota of shame left he should resign,” Mr Achuthanandan said.

He asked if K.M. Mani who allegedly took a Rs 1 crore bribe was not in the ministry. “But is it right for a minister who is facing charges of taking Rs 5.5 crore and Rs 10 crore as bribes to continue in the Cabinet?”

Mr Achuthanandan said home minister Ramesh Chennithala had stated that there was no need for quick verification and only a simple probe was needed against Babu. He even went on to say that both probes were similar.

“If the two probes are same then why did Thrissur Vigilance Court order QV against him?” he asked and accused the home minster of resorting to cheap tactics to save the tainted ministers.

The opposition leader said even the police top brass was divided on the issue of corruption. “When DGP Jacob Thomas speaks about corruption, the state police chief T.P. Senkumar is trying to justify the corrupt by making rubbish statments,” he added.

Meanwhile, Congress workers took out a march to Cantonment House to protest the baseless allegations being levelled by Mr Achuthanandan.
