Small is beautiful

Kiran Kumar’s 1,300 sq. ft apartment might be small, but it is big when it comes to aesthetics.
In a building that houses 10 flats, Kiran Kumar’s humble 1,300 sq. ft apartment stands out. He resides in the apartment with wife Shailaja, son Vihaasith and daughter Vaishnavi.
Having been in the business of real estate for over 10 years now and shuttling between Hong Kong and India every month, Kiran decided to implement a little bit of what he has seen in Chinese homes, in his apartment here.
A bright welcome: The formal living room of their house
“Most of the homes there are small but the interiors are very well done. I wanted to do the same here,” says Kiran, adding, “In this building, there are so many other apartments and unless one walks into our apartment, they will think it’s the same as others. But we brought about a complete structural change and changed the look of the place.”
Movie time: The home theatre
The family did away with the 3BHK and kept just two bedrooms to make way for a bigger dining hall and a home theatre. “The concept I had in mind was to show that small is beautiful. So we broke down the walls to bring more space for the dining hall and converted the initial dining space into a home theatre,” he says.
Wine and dine: The dining hall
The furniture for the entire house has been brought from China. “I have a logistics business of shipping furniture and more from China, so I knew the best to get for my house. In fact, since all the manufacturers know me, I got a pretty good discount,” says Kiran with a laugh.
While Kiran took suggestions from many of his architect friends, interior designer Monica Kakinada implemented them.
