Tubectomy deaths: Karnataka tops the list

According to the data, in the same four-year period, across the country 530 deaths were reported.

Bengaluru: How many female deaths were reported from the state of Karnataka during or after the sterilization or tubectomy operations which were done under the family planning scheme/camps during each of the last three-and-a-half years?

In the year 2012-13, the state topped the list with 22 such deaths, followed by Andhra, which reported 20 such deaths. In the last three years, a total number of 52 women lost their lives while undergoing these operations.

According to the data with the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, in the year 2012-13, a total of 22 deaths were reported. There were 14 deaths in the year 2013-14. In the year 2014-15 it was 13. But from the year 2015-16 till now the number is 5. None of the other states have recorded as many deaths.

According to the data, in the same four-year period, across the country 530 deaths were reported. “Maharashtra, Andhra and Tamil Nadu are the other states which have recorded the highest deaths of women during or after sterilization or tubectomy operations,” informed an officer.

Interestingly, poor states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha have recorded lower numbers of deaths in the same period,” he added. According to the Ministry officials, the reason attributed for these deaths are mostly medical in nature and due to operative procedures other than sterilization.

According to health activists, one of the reasons for the increasing number of deaths is negligence at the government health centers. Speaking to DC, an activist, who wished to be anonymous said, “These operations are essential to stabilize the population growth. If these deaths were reported, there is a possibility of adverse impact on the women who come for tubectomy operations.” “It is sad that Karnataka is at the top of the list where the highest deaths were reported,” he added.
