Kottayam: The state government has not established a police station so far to take care of the Mullaperiyar dam, the reservoir and the nearby forest areas. At least 117 police personnel have been posted in the area, but they are staying at various places.
Kerala had told the Supreme Court in an affidavit on March 27 that adequate security will be provided for the Mullaperiyar dam and the cabinet had decided to establish a police station there.
Kerala filed the affidavit after Tamil Nadu demanded deployment of central forces for the protection of the dam. Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash who visited Kumily on Wednesday asked the district collector to find a spot for the police station.
“Right now, the policemen stationed in the area lack coordination in the absence of a police station. The minister asked us to find a building for the police station,” Idukki ADM P.K.R. Prasad told Deccan Chronicle.
The state cabinet on July 23 had sanctioned 196 new posts for the police station headed by an assistant commandant or deputy superintendent of police and allocated Rs 85 lakh for purchasing equipment, including surveillance cameras.
