K Chandrasekhar Rao for more Assembly seats
Centre apprehends similar demands from other states, particularly from the ones that were bifurcated, if seats are increased in TS and AP
Hyderabad: TS Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday met Union Parliamentary Affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu in Delhi and requested him to bring an amendment to the AP Reorganisation Act to allow both TS and AP increase their Assembly seats without affecting the Lok Sabha seats.
Recently, the Union minister of state for home affairs had informed the Lok Sabha that it would consider any increase in the number of Assembly seats only after 2026 delimitation exercise.
Mr Rao said an amendment to the Bifurcation Act could be brought limiting the increase of seats to only TS and AP, on the lines of the two amendments brought to the Act after the NDA came to power at Centre.
However, Mr Venkaiah Naidu said that at present, the Law Ministry was considering whether such an amendment will stand legal scrutiny and whether they need to amend the Constitution or the Bifurcation Act. “We will consider the issue positively,” he told Mr Rao.
