Fund crunch at BBMP hits birth control drive of strays

BBMP has been getting lukewarm response from non-government organisations (NGO).

BENGALURU: BBMP has been getting lukewarm response from non-government organisations (NGO), who deal with catching stray dogs and animal birth control (ABC) due to the shortage of funds. As a result the sterilization and anti-rabies programmes are missing their targets.

BBMP sources told DC that majority of the NGOs are disinterested in dealing with the BBMP for two reasons. Firstly the payments due to these NGOs get delayed inordinately, forcing them to pull out. Secondly, since the ABC and anti-rabies vaccination programme have commenced across the nation, including the North East, these NGOs are finding it extremely difficult to get skilled workers to catch dogs.

Even the city’s traffic snarls are affecting their day to day activities. Catching dogs is a Herculean task and on top of it driving back and forth is time consuming. There is a need for scientific arrangement of packages and involvement of more NGOs, sources added.

The BBMP has earmarked just '2 crore in its budget for vaccinating 87,000 stray dogs annually across the city and to carry out ABC programme on stray dogs.

Compassion Unlimited Plus Action, Sarvodaya, Dr Richa Agarwal Foundation, Animal Rights Fund (ARF) and Vets for animals are the NGOs serving the BBMP. The authorities are finding it difficult to meet both the ends. Unless the budget is enhanced the animal husbandry wing would find it extremely difficult to manage the things, sources added.
