Sagarika Ghatge was the original choice to play Sangeeta Bijlani in 'Azhar'
The actress has been replaced by Nargis Fakhri.
Sagarika Ghatge, best known as the fiery Preeti Sabarwal from Chak De India, had offers pouring in from all corners after the film had released. It has been seven years and even now people identify her as Preeti. The actress could have easily cashed in on her fame, but she wanted to take it slow. In the past she has said that she is very particular about signing films as she doesn’t want to do anything that she wouldn’t be proud of later. However, very recently she lost out on a big offer from a leading banner.
A source said, “The makers of Azhar got in touch with Sagarika about Sangeeta Bijlani’s role in the film. She read the part and it was all going well. In fact, everyone was convinced that she was the best person to play the role. Sangeeta and Sagarika share a certain amount of physical resemblance. Also, the makers felt that Sagarika’s royal background added to the credibility of her essaying the character of a well-heeled, classy woman like Sangeeta.
Add to that, she has already worked with Emraan Hashmi (who plays Azhar) in Rush and they share a good comfort level. The source added, “After a lot of talk between Sagarika and the makers, it simply faded away. She was looking forward to the role and had already started on her basic research. But for some reason the makers decided to rope in Nargis Fakhri for the part.”
