MLC polls: Chandrasekhar Rao targets grassroots

TRS targets lower-rung leaders to strengthen its base.

Hyderabad: After legislators, the TRS leadership has set eyes on the grassroots-level leaders. The number of such leaders joining the party has increased dramatically after the MLC poll schedule was announced.

TRS, which won 63 Assembly seats in the 2014 elections, has gradually increased its tally, both in the Assembly and Council. While the party is comfortably placed in both the Houses, it still needs to strengthen its base at the grassroots level. This is where Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is focusing on.

He has asked his legislators to ensure that active leaders, including elected representatives like sarpanches, MPTC, ZPTCs, councillors and others join the party before the MLC elections.

Interestingly, all the new entrants to the party assert that they have done so for the sake of development of their respective areas and after being impressed by the TRS government’s welfare and developmental programmes.

“We have joined the TRS impressed by KCR’s vision. We will extend full support to his programmes and policies,” says Lavanya Srinivas Goud, BJP chairperson of Bhuvangiri municipality.

A dozen councillors including the chairperson and the vice-chairperson of this municipality switched over to the TRS from the BJP. Besides, Congress, TD and independents joined the party, and more are expected to follow them.

“After the massive victory in Warangal bypoll, many legislators and others, especially grassroots-level leaders, are making a beeline to the TRS hoping to bask in the power. TRS is still weak at the grassroots-level,” a senior party leader told Deccan Chronicle.

Energy minister Jagdeesh Reddy said, “Those who have joined the TRS and are about to want to be part of development. Congress leaders should not teach us lessons on defections. In fact, it’s time they begin introspection.”

Hyderabad High Court rejects plea on MLC polls as infructuous

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt of the Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday dismissed two petitions against conducting of MLC elections in Ranga Reddy and Khammam districts as infructuous. P. Ajay Kumar and K. Mallesh said that without elections to the GHMC and KMC, holding elections to the MLC seats in the local bodies quota will be unconstitutional.
