Giant pumps from Delhi to remove stagnant water

Chennai: Giant pumps airlifted to the city by Indian Air Force from Delhi and arranged by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) came in handy for Chennai corporation to remove stagnant water.. These engine-operated drain pumps were something hitherto unseen for the corporation engineers as they struggled to assemble the machines. In the end, two engineers from Grundfos assisted the corporation officials on site.
“These are machines used at disaster sites and so the corporation officials here have not had an opportunity to see one of it before. After we helped put it together and showed them how to get the stuff done, they monitored the pumping out process,” said N.K. Ranganath, MD of Grundfos.
The pumps flew in on December 7 and was set up at Seethammal colony at Alwarpet on the mid night of December 8. The stagnant water was removed in a matter of hours. Similarly, such pumps were used in SIDCO Nagar at Villivakkam, Ekattuthangal and other heavily inundated localities.
“Twenty-five more giant pumps will arrive in the city in a day’s time,” added Ranganath, who is also past president of CII, Chennai Chapter. However, a problem of different proportions is still prevalent in core areas of Tondiarpet and extended areas in Valasaravakkam zones. Stagnant sewage remains uncleared which has led to discontent among locals. “We have reported to authorities. They make false promises stating that they will come but nobody has come so far,” said Rani, a resident of V.O.C. Nagar in RK Nagar area, the Chief Minister’s constituency.
