DKS: City short of 1,200 MW power

Currently the state was facing a power deficit of 3,000 MW.
BENGALURU: Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar has said that Bengaluru city was facing a power deficit of 1,200 MW, while the state was short of 2,000 MW and assured that measure are being taken to overcome the shortage. At an event to mark the 110th anniversary of the electrification of Bengaluru, the first city in India to get electricity generated by a hydel plant situated in Shivanasamudra in 1906, he said that energy generated by sugarcane bagasse has improved the power scenario to some extent.
Currently the state was facing a power deficit of 3,000 MW, of which 1,000 MW has been purchased and tenders have been floated for the remaining 2,000 MW, he said. The Minister added that power was being purchased from the Damodar Valley Corporation and Kudankulam nuclear plant. He assured that power sector will not be privatized and the state would strive to become one of the best energy supplier in the country. As
for solar energy, he pointed out that Karnataka had one of the best solar policies. It is the only state to have grid-connected rooftop solar power, he added.
The Minister ruled out the possibility of re-examination for recruitments done in the energy department last year and said that the exams were conducted in a transparent manner. He said Kannadigas will be given priority, while recruiting engineers in energy department.
