DGP Anurag Sharma: Can tackle Paris-type attack

Octopus can reach any spot in minutes.
Hyderabad: Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma said on Wednesday that the police had the ability to tackle a Paris-style attack in Hyderabad. Talking at a ‘Meet the Press’ organised by the Telangana State Union of Working Journalists, Mr Sharma said, “The intelligence wing of Telangana police is very active and well equipped compared to other states. We have interceptor vehicles with armed men and the counter terrorism force, Octopus, who can reach any emergency spot in minutes. So we would be able to thwart the attempts of terrorists in the city,” Mr Sharma said.
He added that with the help of moderate religious leaders and family members, the police was de-radicalising youngsters who were attracted to the IS ideology. The DGP also said that the police would continue to have a strict policy against Maoists. “They (the Maoists) do not believe in our Constitution and democratic process. So there is no change in our policy towards them.”
He added that 15,000 posts were vacant in the Telangana police after the state's bifurcation and they would be filled soon. Candidates with expertise in latest technologies would be given preference. “We are giving 33 per cent reservation to women in civil police recruitment so that each police station in the state will have women. The presence of female cops is an effective way to deal with crime against women,” he said.
Mr Sharma said that efforts were on to evaluate policing and usage of social media like Facebook was part of it. He also added that the department had hired Deloitte and the Indian School Business to evaluate the state’s policing.
