2,802 jailed for drunk driving

Among these, 19 per cent of the drivers caught during police checks were convicted by local courts.
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police has secured the conviction of 2,802 people caught for traffic offences this year, following a crackdown on criminals. Among these, 19 per cent of the drivers caught during police checks were convicted by local courts to jail terms ranging up to a week. Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma said the drives conducted by the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police were “the most successful in the entire country.”
“We do not spare drunk drivers, and that is the success of this mission. I have even told all my close friends not to call me for help if they are caught driving drunk,” said Mr Sharma. Courts usually order imprisonment of up to one week in most cases, but there have been instances when drunk drivers have been given longer terms.
“This year at least a dozen drivers were imprisoned for three months. The seriousness of the cases prompted the court to order the sentence. A driver was caught six times by the police while he was riding under the influence of alcohol. He was sent to prison for three months,” said Hyderabad Traffic deputy commissioner of police A.V. Ranganath.
